Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands

The Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands is held at the Asheville, North Carolina Civic Center in July and October with exhibits from more than 200 artists filling two floors with fine handcrafted items.  The fairs, a local tradition since 1948, showcase the work of members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and also feature craft demonstrations and live regional music.

Members of the Craft Guild must pass a rigorous jury process to become part of the organization.  Membership is open to artists who live in the mountain counties of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, the Carolinas, Tennessee, & Virginia.  Their artistry includes works of clay, fiber, glass, leather, metal, mixed media, natural materials, paper, wood, and jewelry.

Although crafts can be found at numerous galleries, these fairs offer people the opportunity to connect with the artists by purchasing directly from them.  In an age of mass production and imports, the connection to fine American craft and the individual maker is more important than ever.
